The Blue Book
For ten years I have tried to trawl the culture - largely European, British and American, for the most intelligent and insightful works of literature and film. This book contains lists I made.
There are also lists of others' recommendations - very few mind you. For example I think that Thomas Bernhard's Extinction is a book that shows one of the most enlightened and alive minds of the 20th C. Maybe the most. And within that book he inserts little party pieces where he venerates his favourites of literature, and some music and other art, too. I went through it and collated a list of Bernhard's best. I then checked his recommendations over the years myself. He was not awry.
